Today, Sam and I were invited to the Akashi International Association (the place where we do our language lessons) Mochi Tsuki Party. This meant that we made mochi – a sticky, chewy rice paste – from scratch! It was excellent fun. First you pound the hell out of steamed rice with a big hammer in a mortar and pestle kind of thing. Then you take the sticky, stretchy substance left over and roll it into balls, with or without red bean paste inside, or kinako (powdered roasted soybean powder) on the outside. Then you eat it. We met lots of nice people, and got a few offers for English speaking positions.
After the Mochi Pounding party, Sam and Rob and I went into Sannomiya to meet up with Jodie, and go to the Kobe Luminarie. The Luminarie is an annual event in memory of the Kobe Earthquake. There are lots of lovely lights down one of the streets of Kobe, and lots and lots of people to some and see it with us.
Food Highlight of the Day: Mochi, of course.
