Singapore Badminton Open

The Institute for Sports Research (where Eoin works) get contacted by various sports companies for various collaborative research projects and he's been in a lot of meetings talking about potential for work in a whole range of sports products, equipment measurement and even international sports standards (all in only a few short weeks. But my favourite industry request to ISR so far has been the Hawk-Eye people contacting ISR to supply a few people to assist them to run the system for the OUE Singapore Open - an international badminton tournament. I tagged along to watch some matches, and it ended up being a really awesome day!

My view from behind the officials (Hawk-Eye guys over there at left)
All three courts (Hawkeye guys over at the left, Eoin in blue shirt)
Eoin actually got to make some decisions for the games - there were a few contests on his court (Court 3), and he got to change the outcome of the game a few times. He worked the high spped cameras to check line calls (the tracking software was actually out for the day) and a few of the games in his court were televised!

There were some seriously high profile players there, apparently, but what do I know about badminton? Some huge cheers for a few of the Indonesian players, and interesting to see the different styles of play between Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Indian and Danish players I watched. It was a lovely, air-conditioned day.
